A recent study indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically see a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
Explaining the Fast Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the injections accounts for the accelerated weight return.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts argue that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be life-long.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of cravings.
"It was like a trigger that goes on and you're instantly starving," said one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and long-term success likely depends on combined behavioural support.
