A tragic train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and management of the country's key public works projects.
The disaster happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his government's economic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Safety Concerns
The construction of both rail lines was supervised by the army, marking a dramatic increase of its duties in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised significant apprehensions over construction quality.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all similar projects.
This stoppage was requested until the completion of a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been functioning in total compliance with all security protocols. Promises were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the construction and operation of these strategic undertakings.
